Causes of Long-Term Growth in Swedish Pharmaceutical Spending An analysis of changes from 2015 to 2025

During the period 2015–2025, pharmaceutical expenditures in Sweden increased by 36 percent in real terms (i.e., adjusted for inflation), corresponding to an average annual growth rate of just over 3 percent.

A new report presents a number of analyses conducted by TLV on the reasons behind this increase. The focus is on the growth in expenditures for subsidized prescription medicines.

Overall, the analyses indicate that expenditures are increasing because the Swedish population is making greater use of medicines that have been launched over the past ten years. This applies to both individuals younger than 65 and those aged 65 and older.
