How it works

The high-cost threshold incrementally reduces patient costs for prescription medicines.

The high-cost threshold applies for a 12-month period from the first purchase.

The high-cost threshold starts to apply after purchases amounting to 1,425 SEK for prescription medicines during a 12-month period.

The maximum cost for a patient for prescription medicines in the high-cost threshold system is 2,850 SEK during a 12-month period.

The high-cost threshold system decreases your costs for prescription medicines in stages

The patient pays a full price for their medicines up until 1,300 SEK. Following this the discount system comes into effect:

  • Between 1,426 SEK and 2,720 SEK you pay 50 percent of the cost of the medicine
  • Between 2,721 SEK and 5,054 SEK you pay 25 percent of the cost of the medicine
  • Between 5,055 SEK and 6,993 SEK you pay 10 percent of the cost of the medicine

If a patient has bought medicines on prescription for 2,850 SEK within a 12-month period then they do not pay more for their medicines during the remaining time in that period.

Prescribed drugs in the reimbursement system are free for children under 18 years of age. However, if they choose not to accept substitution of substitutable medicines, they will have to pay an additional cost.

Contraceptives in the reimbursement system are free for people under the age of 21. However, if they choose not to accept substitution of substitutable contraceptives, they will have to pay an additional cost.
